Harry Russell – Candidate for Key West City Commission, District 5
I am excited to introduce myself to the voters of District 5 and all Key West residents. As a proactive and results-driven leader, I am deeply committed to enhancing the quality of life for our community. With a career dedicated to education, leadership, and community service, I will bring a solutions-oriented approach to addressing the city’s challenges while promoting meaningful progress.
Having lived in Key West for over 53 years, I have witnessed the city’s transformation firsthand. My decision to run for the City Commission stems from a lifelong passion for our community and a desire to preserve and improve the place I have always called home.
With a background in education, leadership, and labor relations, I have dedicated my career to service. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Florida State University, a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Administration (FSU), and a Specialist Degree in Leadership and Administration (Walden University).
My 30+ years with the Monroe County School District (MCSD) include roles as a teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal at multiple schools, including a decade leading Sugarloaf Elementary/Middle School to become the county’s top-performing school. In 2020, I was honored as MCSD Principal of the Year. Today, as an Executive Director with MCSD, I oversee human capital management and labor relations, oversee and help to manage multimillion-dollar budgets, and lead key policy initiatives. I also hold a certificate in Advanced Labor Relations from Cornell University. With over 20 years of leadership experience, I am well-prepared to be an effective advocate for the residents of District 5.
Beyond my professional career, I have been an active community leader. I currently serve as Vice Chairman of the Key West Parks and Recreation Board. I have served since the board’s inception in 2020. I am a proud graduate of the Key West Ambassadors Class of 41. Additionally, I am a charter member of the Sunset Rotary Club, where I played a key role in establishing the Bobby Menendez Scholarship, awarded annually at Key West High School. In recognition of my contributions, I received an Outstanding Service Award from the Rotary Club.
My wife, Marla Russell, and I have been married for over 20 years, and we are proud parents of our two daughters, Marlee and Ciera. My deep-rooted dedication to Key West, combined with my leadership experience and problem-solving mindset, makes me a strong advocate for the needs of District 5 and the broader Key West community.
As your candidate for Key West City Commission, District 5, I am committed to promoting transparency, accountability and fostering progress. Working together we can ensure a vibrant future for all who call Key West home. I look forward to engaging with residents, listening to your concerns, and working together to make our city an even better place to live.
